Old Guard vs. New Guard? I
think if you polled the
league, few people would put
Hired Guns into the Old
Guard category. Formerly
called In Appropriate in the
old league, Hired Guns have
been around since the
League’s inception, been to
two tournaments, and hold
the USHSL record for most
improved rank of 87 spots,
from #104 to #17 over the
2007-2008 seasons.
After flying relatively
under the radar, last year
was their coming out party.
After finishing 17th,
they finally broke through
to the Sweet 16, beating
Harry’s Full Disclosure –
their first win against at
Top 20 team since 2008. And
they have the shirts to
prove it.
Despite the historical trend
of odd year jinxes (#104 –
2007; #51 – 2009), they are
off to a 5-0, the best in
team history, and already
notched a win over The Big
Lebowskis in Week 3.
Standing in their way of a
6-0 start is Empire Strikes
Back – the New Guard if you
will.
The Empire is making their
USHSL debut this season –
representing the New York
Republican Delegation. They
made a respectable showing
in their first game, losing
19-10 to #15 The Whole
Enchilada. They will look
to be the giant killers this
week and stage what could be
the biggest upset in GOTW
history. May the force be
with them. (You didn’t
think I would get through a
whole write-up without some
kind of Star Wars pun, did
you?)
