Guns - DGS Preview

With the Liberty Square Sliders claiming the League Championship last year, it's safe to say the moniker for the best team not to win a USHSL Championship goes to DGS.   While they did claim a 2002 trophy before the split, few people remember those days. 

The USHSL resume goes something like this: Final Four appearances in three of five years, including two Championship appearances; Record for Best RPI in a single season; 2nd all-time regular season wins; 3rd all-time win percentage;  Top overall tournament seed twice;

USHSL Championships - none.

DGS is off to a 3-0 start and trying to shake off a 2010 season where they finished #1 and lost to their longtime rivals, the Champion Sliders, in the Final Four, 9-8.  While they were the only team to get closer to the Sliders than a slaughter rule, that provides little comfort to a team that's been so close to a USHSL title.

They will get a quick reminder of the tournament when they take the field on Wednesday against the team they beat to reach the Elite 8, the Hired Guns.   The Guns are making their 2nd straight GOTW appearance thanks to the voters, and our third GOTW matchup this season between Top 10 teams. 

As we noted last week, the Guns or off to their best start in team history, including a 23-6 dispatching of Empire Strikes Back last week.  This week's test will be their toughest yet, but a win would certainly push them into the conversation come tournament time, building on their first Sweet 16 appearance last year.

We have two of the remaining 17 undefeated teams left as that elite crew will have to be whittled down on Wednesday to at least one fewer.
