Owego Hose Teams, Inc. entering into their 15th season(14 years in the House League) is back after a heartbreaking loss in the finals to NWO in last year’s tournament.  Rumors of the volunteer firefighters from upstate New York hanging it up in 2019 proved untrue despite several key player retirements this season including stalwarts Kevin Wheeler (20 plus years as a Congressional softball player) and Katie Frawley the sure handed infielder that led Owego’s defense.  Owego will surely be tested in this week’s GOTW facing off against top talented Tequila Mockingbirds. The three-time House champs must figure out how to handle the long ball hitters from the Birds.  History between the two teams over the years is sparse with Owego only playing the Birds a few times.  Owego’s over the hill coach’s scattered memory estimates the overall Owego vs. Birds record to be
even.  Thursday night’s match up in the confines of Anacostia Park will tell who has the upper hand this season in what could be a barn burner.

The Tequila Mockingbirds have been around for over 20 years, showing fellow teams along the way that it’s not always the most athletic or the most fit that win games but rather those with real swag and mad mojo. Our team was founded by staff members of former US Representative Gene Taylor (D-MS)—one of whom (Stephen Peranich) still continues to run the bases like a spring chicken that’s had a few beers along the way.  Ok fine, many, many beers along the way.  Over our history, we’ve had our share of lackluster seasons and disappointing tournament runs but no one can deny that we know how to have a blast, yes at times, to the detriment of Friday mornings.  Our squad is a tight one and we don’t mean cheap….although we have some of those as well (we blame pay on the Hill).  We’re proud to have a DJ on our squad who provides us with walk up music and colorful commentary during the game, two father and son duos, a few married couples (some that actually met on the squad) and plenty of single folks who can’t quite figure it out just yet.   Regardless, we accept all challengers and are always willing and ready to bust a can of whoopa** on anyone willing to take us on. This week, we face Owego who’s played us tough in the past (some games were pretty lopsided in favor of Owego) but this time around these Hoses are getting clamped and bamboozled by the TBirds.
